The Introduction to Karachi Port, the Largest Seaport in Pakistan

Karachi Port is the largest seaport in Pakistan and one of the most important ports in South Asia. Located on the coast of the Arabian Sea, near the center of Karachi, it serves as main hub of Pakistan for trade and logistics. With a long history, the strategic location of Karachi Port makes it a key gateway connecting the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Karachi Port is divided into two areas: East Wharf and West Wharf. In addition to supporting domestic trade activities, it also plays a vital role in providing landlocked countries like Afghanistan with access to the sea.

The southeastern shore of the port basin has 17 berths, with a total quay length of 2,629 meters, primarily used for handling general cargo. Berths 5, 6, and 7 are also used for container handling, while berths 1 to 4 are designated for passenger services.

The northwestern shore of the port basin has 8 berths, with berth lengths ranging from 167 to 213 meters, primarily used for bulk cargo handling. Berths 23 and 24 in the southwest are also used for container handling. There are 5 oil berths in total. In addition to berth 20 on the western wharf, there are two oil jetties located on the eastern side of the inbound shipping channel, south of the eastern wharf.

Karachi Port is crucial to Pakistan's economy, with around 30 berths in total and an annual throughput exceeding 15 million tons. It handles over 90% of the country's import and export cargo.
